Foresight for sustainable food systems in the Eastern Gangetic Plains (EGP): Status, synthesis and stakeholder engagement for current understanding

The aim of IFPRI’s project is to lay the groundwork for an open, scientifically informed and participatory foresight for food exercise in the EGP region, by preparing status papers on major drivers of food systems in the region; collating a repository of relevant data and reports related to food systems; and convening relevant stakeholders in a participatory training exercise.

Institutions to support intensification, integrated decision making and inclusiveness in agriculture in the East Gangetic Plain

This project by University of South Australia aims to develop capacity within district, state and national agencies in the EGP to identify and consistently promote institutions that foster the “3 I’s"” (intensification, integrated decision making and inclusiveness).

Sustainable Agricultural Mechanisation in the EGP: Facilitating change through institutional innovation

CIMMYT's project aims to support partners to strategically plan for and implement transformational change at provincial levels in Nepal, using agricultural mechanisation as a case study.

Identifying Eastern Gangetic Plains soil constraints

This University of Queensland project will provide information to determine whether there is a problem/response associated with a set of specific soil constraints in the EGP, to inform future research work and scaling strategies.

Understanding changing weed dynamics in farming systems intensification in the Eastern Gangetic Plains

This project by CIMMYT aims to improve understanding on the response of men and women farmers to changing weed dynamics due to CASI adoption in the EGP.

Quantifying crop yield gaps across the IGP from new perspectives – production, farmer profit and sustainability of water use

CSIRO’s project will quantify current yield gaps (physiological, economic, and sustainable-water) for major food crops across the IGP.

Value chain and policy interventions to accelerate adoption of zero tillage in rice-wheat farming systems across the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Adelaide University’s project examined how the adoption of ZT seed drills (including the Happy Seeder) can be accelerated to help reduce the prevalence of stubble burning and boost sustainable food production and water security in NW India and the EGP.

Political economy analysis of cross border agricultural trade in Bangladesh, India and Nepal

This project from The Asia Foundation aimed to frame the political economy of rice trade by casting light on key variables that should be considered both in the policy formulation process and interventions by external actors.

Understanding women's role in agriculture in the EGP: The macro and micro connections

This SaciWATERs project aims to understand the role of women in agriculture in the EGP, and to make connections between macro and micro data sources to explain variations.

Pilot project on commercialisation of smallholders' CA-based planters in Bangladesh

This project from Murdoch University aims to advance the CA-based mechanization program for smallholders in Bangladesh.

Aquifer characterisation, artificial recharge and reuse of suddenly available water in south Bihar

This Nalanda University project will assess recharge capacity, benefits derived, and key social factors that help adoption of the Bhungroo® technology by the small-holder farmers in South Bihar.

The regional hydrological impact of farm-scale water saving measures in the EGP

This CSIRO project aims to provide options for sustainable groundwater management for irrigated crop production in the EGP.
